Guatemala & Belize: From Mayan Ruins to Coral Reefs
Tucked between Mexico and the Caribbean, Guatemala is one of Central America’s most underrated gems. It’s a country of towering volcanoes, vibrant colonial cities, ancient Mayan ruins, and rich indigenous culture. For those who’ve already done Peru or want something equally thrilling but less travelled, Guatemala is a compelling alternative. With its colourful markets, rugged landscapes, and heartfelt hospitality, it’s perfect for travellers seeking depth, variety, and something a little unexpected.
Belize, just next door, offers the ideal complement. Think turquoise waters, remote cayes, and world-class diving and snorkelling on the second largest barrier reef in the world. Combining the two gives you jungle-to-reef magic in one journey.

Highlights of Your Guatemala & Belize Journey
Antigua: Nestled between three volcanoes, this beautifully preserved colonial city is all cobblestone streets, colourful facades, and buzzing plazas. It’s Guatemala’s cultural heart and a brilliant place to start your trip.
Lake Atitlán: Ringed by volcanic peaks and dotted with traditional Mayan villages, the lake is as peaceful as it is picturesque. Each village has its own personality, and exploring by boat is the best way to soak it all in.
Tikal National Park: Deep in the jungle, these dramatic Mayan ruins are one of Central America’s most iconic archaeological sites. Sunrise from the top of Temple IV is something you never forget.
Helicopter Transfers: Guatemala has the second-highest number of privately owned helicopters in the world (after the U.S.), making stylish and efficient transfers to remote lodges or ruins easily possible.
Volcano Hikes & Adventures: With 33 volcanoes (3 still active), there are plenty of ways to explore on foot, from gentle walks to challenging climbs. Pacaya is one of the most accessible, where you can even roast marshmallows on volcanic heat.
Mayan Cultural Immersion: Around 50% of Guatemala’s population is still indigenous Mayan. The culture, dress, food and language remain vibrantly alive, especially in the highlands.
Off the Beaten Track
One of our favourite touches is arranging private candlelit dinners in a Mayan ruin, or sleeping under canvas in remote locations most travellers never reach. Our ground partners have deep roots here, which means access to authentic, extraordinary moments.
Belize Beach Extensions From jungle to reef, Belize offers a laid-back contrast to Guatemala. Dive or snorkel the Great Blue Hole, explore Hol Chan Marine Reserve, or just relax on white-sand beaches in Ambergris Caye or Placencia.
Cuisine & Culture
Expect hearty stews, fresh tortillas, roasted meats and locally grown coffee. The street food in Guatemala City and Antigua is especially good, try a pupusa or tamal. Belize brings Caribbean flair with its seafood, coconut rice, and vibrant Creole and Garifuna influences.

Our Top Tips
Pack layers – Guatemala’s highlands can be cool in the mornings, while Belize is warm and tropical. Layers keep you comfortable as you move between regions.
Say yes to street food – Fresh tortillas, tamales, and grilled lake fish, some of our best meals have been the simplest, picked up from a roadside stand or market.
Start early – Sunrise over Tikal, diving trips in Belize, village visits, many of the highlights are best experienced first thing. Worth it every time.
Wear good shoes – You’ll likely be walking through ruins, along jungle trails, or hopping between boats. Comfy, practical footwear makes all the difference.
