Ecuador: A Different Kind of Luxury

Cloud Forest, Highlands & Coast: Where Wild Beauty Meets Quiet Comfort

Most people hear “Ecuador” and think only of the Galápagos. But on the mainland, something far more unexpected awaits: mist-wrapped cloud forests alive with hummingbirds, Andean valleys dotted with old haciendas, and a Pacific coastline where life slows to an easy rhythm.

Ecuador isn’t loud about its beauty it reveals itself gradually. It gets under your skin in the best way, offering real connection, wild landscapes, and a quiet kind of luxury that feels incredibly human.

Here’s a glimpse of what makes it one of our favourite journeys for travellers looking for something different.

The Cloud Forest: A World Suspended in Mist

Just two hours from Quito, the world shifts. One minute it’s high-altitude city views, the next you’re driving into lush, emerald-green forest and the sound of distant waterfalls.

Stay somewhere that matches the setting places like:

Mashpi Lodge – A glass-fronted eco-lodge surrounded by some of the richest biodiversity on earth. Naturalist-led walks, night safaris and even a gentle open-air “sky bike” through the canopy make this feel like a deep breath for the soul.

A moment worth noting:
Wake up early, sit with a coffee on the terrace, and watch the hummingbirds arrive. It’s oddly mesmerising and very grounding.

Haciendas of the Highlands: Soulful, Slow & Steeped in Story

The Andean highlands are all wide skies, crisp mountain air, hand-woven textiles, and long, unhurried afternoons.

For us, the beauty of this region lies in the haciendas many are still run by families who have been here for generations. Two favourites:

Hacienda Zuleta – A warm, historic property with wood-beam ceilings, fireplaces in every room, and miles of private trails to explore on horseback or foot.
Hacienda Pinsaquí – Known for its gardens, crafts, and quiet charm the sort of place where you naturally slow down without trying.

A small but lovely experience:
A weaving workshop with local Otavaleño artisans, or simply popping into the market for fresh chocolate, hand-carved goods, and textiles you’ll actually want to bring home.

The Coast: Quiet Beaches & Barefoot Calm

If you’re after beaches without the crowds, Ecuador’s Pacific coast is a peaceful alternative to more obvious winter-sun destinations.

Style-wise, think boutique and easygoing:

Las Tanusas Retreat & Spa – A small barefoot-luxury hideaway with exceptional farm-to-table food (very much a “wow” moment of the trip for many).
Mantaraya Lodge – Laid-back, colourful, and perfectly positioned for visiting Machalilla National Park and the Los Frailes beach.

A lovely way to spend a day:
Take a private boat out to Isla de la Plata often called the “little Galápagos” for whale watching (in season) and gentle snorkelling.
